Five Fabulous Yarn Picks for Graphgans

Today, I’m diving into one of my all-time favorite topics: yarn! Specifically, I want to spill the beans on five fabulous yarns that I’ve fallen head over heels for when it comes to crocheting graphgans. So grab your cup of coffee (or tea, I won’t judge!) and let’s chat yarn.

I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “Another yarn post, Lauren?” But trust me, this one’s worth it. Because when it comes to graphgans – those mesmerizing crochet creations bursting with color – the yarn you choose can make all the difference. It’s like picking the perfect paint colors for a masterpiece!

I’m pretty sure my first ever graphgan was made with Simply Chunky by Paintbox Yarns (but don’t quote me on that – it was a loooong time ago!). Looking back, it was clearly a good choice as a newbie who didn’t know much about yarns. The soft, squishy texture and vibrant colors made it a joy to work with, so much so that its sister yarn Simply Aran has made it onto today’s list.

What Makes a Yarn Stand Out?

Well, let me tell you – it’s a bit like finding a unicorn in the yarn aisle. After years of experimenting and countless skeins later, I still haven’t stumbled upon a yarn that ticks every single box on my list, but there are several key factors I always keep in mind when on the hunt for the ideal graphgan yarn.

First things first, let’s talk about the almighty dollar. When it comes to graphgans, you’re going to need a lot of yarn. Like, a LOT. So, affordability is key. That’s why I always keep an eye out for yarns that offer great quality at a reasonable price. After all, why break the bank when you can create stunning designs without emptying your wallet?

Nobody wants a scratchy blanket, am I right? That’s why softness is non-negotiable when it comes to selecting yarn for graphgans. Whether you’re snuggling up on the couch or wrapping yourself in handmade warmth, the last thing you want is an itchy yarn ruining the cozy vibes. So, I always opt for yarns that are as soft as a cloud, ensuring that every stitch is a pleasure to work with and a joy to cuddle up with.

Let’s face it – your graphgan is going to become your new bestie. From lazy Sunday mornings to movie nights with friends, it’s going to see a lot of action. That’s why durability is a must. You want a yarn that can stand up to daily wear and tear, holding its shape and color wash after wash. So, when I’m choosing yarn for graphgans, I look for options that are as tough as they are beautiful, ensuring that my creations last a lifetime.

Color Options:

Last but certainly not least (in fact, this probably should have been first!), let’s talk about color. After all, how do you create a stunning colorwork masterpiece without a rainbow of options to choose from? When it comes to graphgans, the more colors, the better. That’s why I always seek out yarns that offer a wide range of vibrant hues, allowing me to unleash my creativity and bring my designs to life in full technicolor glory.

Alright, let’s cut to the chase – which yarns made the cut for my top five?

Why I Love It:
Uptown Worsted by Universal Yarn takes the crown as the softest acrylic yarn I’ve had the pleasure of working with. From the moment you lay your hands on it, you’ll understand why I’m head over heels for this yarn. It’s like crocheting with clouds – cozy, plush, and utterly delightful.

What I Would Change About It:
While Brava Worsted is a fantastic yarn in many respects, if I had to make one improvement, it would be to enhance its softness. While it’s perfectly suitable for a wide range of projects, a slightly softer feel would elevate it to the next level of coziness and comfort.

The Softness Superstar

Heatherly Worsted By We Crochet

Heatherly Worsted by We Crochet is a dream to work with, gliding effortlessly over the hook with every stitch. But what truly sets it apart is its unparalleled softness. Made from a luxurious blend of 80% acrylic and 20% Merino Wool, this yarn is a delight to touch and a joy to crochet with.

With its soft, plush texture and gentle drape, Heatherly Worsted is the perfect choice for baby blankets and other projects that require next-to-skin softness. Available in 20 charming pastel colors, this yarn offers a subtle and sophisticated palette that’s ideal for creating timeless heirloom pieces. While it may be the most expensive yarn on this list, the quality speaks for itself. With Heatherly Worsted, you truly get what you pay for – superior softness and unmatched quality.

What I Would Change About It:
If there’s one thing I would change about Heatherly Worsted, it’s the color options. While the existing range of pastel hues is lovely, I can’t help but wish for more variety. With a wider selection of shades to choose from, this yarn would be unstoppable. If Heatherly Worsted offered the same extensive color palette as some of the other yarns on this list, I’d never use any other yarn again.

The Dye-Verse Dynamo

Amigo XL By Hobbii

Why I Love It:
Amigo Yarn boasts an impressive selection of over 60 vibrant colors, making it a go-to choice for crafters who love to experiment with color. With such a wide range of hues to choose from, the creative possibilities are endless, allowing you to bring your vision to life with ease.

A Little Bit About This Yarn:
While Amigo Yarn offers an extensive color palette and durable construction, it’s not my top pick in terms of softness. As a 100% acrylic yarn, it dones’t have luxurious feel of some other yarns on this list. However, where it truly shines is in its color options. From bold primaries to soft pastels, Amigo comes in every shade imaginable, ensuring that you’ll always find the perfect color for your project. Plus, its acrylic composition means it’s built to last, making it a practical choice for projects that will see a lot of wear and tear.

What I Would Change:
If I could make one improvement to Amigo Yarn, it would be to enhance its softness. While its durability and color range are impressive, a softer texture would elevate this yarn to the next level and make it even more enjoyable to work with.

Graphgans I’ve Made With This Yarn:

Despite its less soft texture, I’ve used Amigo Yarn extensively in my crafting projects. One notable example is the Hobbii Dog Blankets, where the wide range of available colors allowed me to create vibrant and eye-catching designs that pups love to snuggle up with.

As for my current favorite yarn choice? It’s always evolving, but right now, I’m absolutely smitten with Uptown Worsted by Universal Yarn. Its exceptional softness, vibrant color range, and durability make it the perfect companion for any graphgan project.
