Coral Flower Crochet Square Pattern – Petal & Patch CAL Week 4

Welcome to Week 4 of the Petal & Patch Crochet-Along!

This week we’re adding the Coral Flower and matching Coral Wattle Stitch Squares. The warm coral petals bring a lovely burst of color to the blanket and work beautifully alongside the blue, pink, and yellow flowers you’ve already made.

By the end of this week you’ll have sixteen of the twenty squares finished. At this point the blanket really starts to look like the finished design, and laying all of your completed squares out together is incredibly satisfying.

About This Week’s Squares

This week you’ll be making:

  • 2 Coral Flower Squares
  • 2 Coral Wattle Squares

Once you’ve finished this week’s squares, you’ll have just the leafy squares and one pair of wattle stitch squares left before we move on to joining the blanket together.

Materials

Brava Worsted (worsted weight, 100% Premium Acrylic; 218 yards / 200 meters, 100g):

Cream: 196 yards / 180 meters
Coral: 425 yards / 390 meters
Canary: 9 yards / 8 meters

You’ll also need:

5 mm crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Scissors
Yarn needle

Optional but recommended: If you’re making the colorwork squares, I highly recommend using yarn bobbins and a bobbin holder. They make it much easier to keep multiple colors organized and help prevent tangles while you crochet.

Crochet Tip

By now you’ve probably spent quite a few hours working on your blanket, so here’s a gentle reminder to take regular breaks. I know it’s tempting to keep crocheting ‘just one more row,’ especially when a flower starts coming to life, but your hands and wrists will appreciate the rest.

Every so often, put your hook down, stretch your fingers, wrists, and shoulders, and give your eyes a break too. A couple of minutes is often all you need before you’re ready to pick your project back up again.

A comfortable crocheter is a happy crocheter, and taking care of your hands now means you’ll be ready to enjoy many more projects in the future.

Coral Wattle Stitch Squares

Your wattle stitch squares should be the same size as your colorwork squares. If you haven’t already, I recommend making one colorwork square and one wattle stitch square first and blocking them both before continuing with the blanket.

Because the stitch patterns are different, and because everyone’s tension varies slightly, the two squares may not match perfectly straight away. If your wattle stitch square is too wide or too narrow, adjust your starting chain, making sure it remains a multiple of 3. If it is too tall or too short, adjust the number of rows until it matches the size of your colorwork square.

Once you’ve found the right size, keep using those same adjustments for every remaining wattle stitch square in the blanket. That way, all of your squares will match when it’s time to join them together.

Make 2 Wattle Squares using Coral.

Ch 48

Row 1: Skip the first 2 chs. *In next ch work 1 SC, ch 1, 1 DC; skip next 2 chs, repeat from * across to last ch. Work 1 SC in last ch. Ch 1, and turn.

Rows 2-29: *In next ch-1 space, work 1 SC, ch 1, 1 DC, repeat from * across. Work 1 SC in the turning ch. Ch 1, and turn.

Row 30: *In next ch-1 space, work 1 SC, ch 1, 1 DC, repeat from * across. Work 1 SC in the turning ch. Fasten off and weave in ends.

The squares can be worked either by following the written instructions or the color charts.

Reading The Chart – Video Tutorial

  • The first row of the pattern is worked in FSC. 
  • For every following row, work a SC into every stitch. 
  • At the end of every row, ch 1 (not counted as a stitch) and turn.
  • The ch 1 at the end of each row is not shown on the chart.
  • The chart is worked flat. Read odd-numbered rows from right to left, and even-numbered rows from left to right.
  • Each square is equal to one SC (or FSC for the first row).

Right and Wrong Sides


This pattern is worked in single crochet back and forth in rows, which creates a smooth, reversible fabric. Because both sides look identical, the Right Side (RS) and Wrong Side (WS) labels are used only to keep the chart orientation consistent.

The chart is read from the bottom up, starting in the bottom-right corner. Everyone follows the chart in this same way, no matter which hand you use to crochet. The only difference is which side you treat as the Right Side (RS):

  • Right-handed crocheters: Odd-numbered rows are the Right Side (RS).
  • Left-handed crocheters: Even-numbered rows are the Right Side (RS).

Following this setup keeps the chart orientation consistent for everyone so that the finished design faces the correct direction, no matter which hand you crochet with.

Color Changes – Video Tutorial

  • When using the same color twice in a row, add multiple bobbins of color as necessary. 
  • To change colors, work last st with the current color until 2 loops remain on the hook, yarn over with the new color, and pull through.
  • Use bobbins to add new yarn, do not carry the yarn that is not in use under stitches.
