More Wings: Crocheting the Second White Butterfly Square | Garden Medley CAL
This week we’re working on the White Butterfly 2 square, another familiar favorite that brings a calm, airy balance to the blanket.
If you enjoyed making White Butterfly 1, this one will feel second nature. It’s the same design, just in a new color layout that adds a bit of variation while keeping that soft, garden-inspired look.
One of my favorite things about the Garden Medley Blanket is how many of the motifs repeat with small color swaps. It keeps everything cohesive without feeling repetitive, and by now you’ll probably find yourself flying through these patterns much faster than when we started.

About This Square
You’ll need to make two of this motif for your blanket. These light, neutral butterflies help break up the stronger colors from previous weeks, giving your finished layout a nice visual balance.
Since you’ve already made this design before, it’s the perfect opportunity to focus on keeping your stitches neat and your tension even.

You’ll need the following materials to complete your White Butterfly 2 square:
Hook: 5 mm (or size needed to meet gauge)
Yarn: Amigo XL from Hobbii (Worsted weight, 100% Acrylic)
A – Ecru: 35 yards / 32 m
B – Black: 11 yards / 10 m
C – Curry: 96 yards / 88 m

Tip of the Week
Let’s talk about weaving in ends. Not exactly the most thrilling part of crochet, but absolutely worth doing now instead of waiting until the end. If you’ve been putting it off, this is the perfect week to start catching up. These butterfly squares work up quickly, which gives you extra time to deal with those loose ends before they get out of hand.
Trust me, you don’t want to face hundreds of them all at once during joining week. Put on your favorite podcast, TV show, or audiobook, and the time will fly by.

Introduction
This pattern can be worked either by following the written instructions or the color chart.
Reading The Chart
The first row of the pattern is worked in FSC. For every following row, work a SC into every stitch. At the end of every row, ch 1 (not counted as a stitch) and turn. The ch 1 at the end of each row is not shown on the chart. The chart is worked flat. Read odd-numbered rows from right to left, and even-numbered rows from left to right. Each square equals one SC (or FSC for the first row).
Right and Wrong Sides
This pattern is worked back and forth in rows of single crochet. Both sides look nearly identical, but the RS and WS labels are used to keep the chart orientation consistent. The chart is read from the bottom right corner upward.
- Right-handed crocheters: Odd-numbered rows are the Right Side (RS)
- Left-handed crocheters: Even-numbered rows are the Right Side (RS)
This keeps everyone’s chart orientation consistent so the finished design faces the correct direction, no matter which hand you crochet with.
Color Changes
- To change colors, work last st with the current color until 2 loops remain on the hook, yarn over with the new color, and pull through.
- Use bobbins to add new yarn, do not carry the yarn that is not in use under stitches.
- When using the same color twice in a row, add multiple bobbins of color as necessary.
