Blooming & Bright: Crocheting the Yellow Flower Squares | Garden Medley CAL
We’re brightening things up this week with the Yellow Flower square! This cheerful, sunny motif brings so much warmth to the Garden Medley Blanket, and it’s one of the simplest, most relaxing designs in the collection.
It’s the perfect project to relax into after a few weeks of more fiddly squares, though we’ll be making three of these, so you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy.

About This Square
You’ll need to make three of this motif for your finished blanket. The big, rounded petals and bold contrast center give this square such a classic floral look. The repetition makes it quick and meditative, once you’ve done the first one, the next two will fly by.

You’ll need the following materials to complete your Yellow Flower square:
Hook: 5 mm (or size needed to meet gauge)
Yarn: Amigo XL from Hobbii (Worsted weight, 100% Acrylic)
A – Ecru: 262 yards / 240 m
C – Curry: 162 yards / 150 m
D – Rust: 20 yards / 18 m
Extras: scissors, yarn needle, stitch markers, yarn bobbins, and a bobbin holder

Tip of the Week
Since we’re making three squares this week, let’s talk about taking breaks. It’s easy to fall into the ‘just one more row’ mindset, especially when a design feels repetitive and calming like this one. But sitting for long stretches can cause arm or shoulder strain.
Try setting a 30-minute timer while you crochet. When it goes off, take a few minutes to stretch your hands, roll your shoulders, and move around. It might sound small, but those mini-breaks keep you comfortable and help you maintain a consistent tension throughout your squares. You’ll end up finishing faster (and feeling better) in the long run.
Introduction
This pattern can be worked either by following the written instructions or the color chart.
Reading The Chart
The first row of the pattern is worked in FSC. For every following row, work a SC into every stitch. At the end of every row, ch 1 (not counted as a stitch) and turn. The ch 1 at the end of each row is not shown on the chart. The chart is worked flat. Read odd-numbered rows from right to left, and even-numbered rows from left to right. Each square equals one SC (or FSC for the first row).
Right and Wrong Sides
This pattern is worked back and forth in rows of single crochet. Both sides look nearly identical, but the RS and WS labels are used to keep the chart orientation consistent. The chart is read from the bottom right corner upward.
- Right-handed crocheters: Odd-numbered rows are the Right Side (RS)
- Left-handed crocheters: Even-numbered rows are the Right Side (RS)
This keeps everyone’s chart orientation consistent so the finished design faces the correct direction, no matter which hand you crochet with.
Color Changes
- To change colors, work last st with the current color until 2 loops remain on the hook, yarn over with the new color, and pull through.
- Use bobbins to add new yarn, do not carry the yarn that is not in use under stitches.
- When using the same color twice in a row, add multiple bobbins of color as necessary.
